Selous Game Reserve/ Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s oldest and largest protected areas. The park covers a vast area of over 30,000 square kilometers, making it not only the largest national park in Tanzania but also one of the largest in Africa. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nyerere National Park is famous for its diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and rich biodiversity.

Nyerere's Sights

The park attracts nature-lovers and wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world, offering an authentic African safari experience. Its diverse ecosystems include riverine forests, woodlands, grassy plains, and wetlands, providing a habitat for a wide range of animal species.

Nyerere National Park is especially renowned for its population of large mammals, including elephants, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, and various antelope species. The park also provides a haven for predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs.

Aside from its incredible wildlife, Nyerere National Park is home to the mighty Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa. The river meanders through the park, creating a lifeline for animals and supplying water to the diverse ecosystems. Visitors can take a boat safari along the river, exploring its channels, lakes, and lagoons, and witnessing a plethora of bird species, including the iconic fish eagle.

Activities While in Nyerere

The park offers an array of activities for visitors to enjoy. Game drives are a popular choice, providing an opportunity to spot the park’s diverse wildlife up close. Boat safaris are also available, offering a unique chance to experience the park on water and learn about the intricate ecosystems. Additionally, adventurous visitors can embark on a fishing expedition on the Rufiji River or even set up camp in designated areas, immersing themselves in the wild and spending a night under the stars.

Nyerere National Park’s remote location and vast size make it a true wilderness destination. Its relatively low tourist numbers compared to other popular Tanzanian parks ensure a more exclusive and intimate safari experience. However, adequate planning and arrangements are necessary due to limited infrastructure within the park, including accommodation and transportation options.
